Tim Mahoney
Democrat, Florida (2006-present)
Must be something in the water. Florida's 16th Congressional district two years ago had the scandal of Mark Foley and his messing around with House pages, teenage boys who work in the House of Representatives. Well, guess what?
Tim Mahoney, the guy who took Foley's place has apparently paid more than $120,000 in hush money to a former staffer, Patricia Allen (and her lawyer), and arranged a $50,000 job for her at a political consulting firm. Mahoney is married, but not to Allen.
Once the alleged affair soured, it got ugly. ABC News posted a recording of someone sounding awfully a lot like Mahoney angrily firing a woman, identified as Allen:
"You work at my pleasure . . . If you're doing the job that I think that you should do, your get to keep your job. Whenever I don't feel like you are doing your job, you lose your job. The only person that matters is, guess who? -- Me. Do you understand that? This his how life really is. This is how it works."
Allen wanted to break off the affair when she found out that the Honorable Mr. Mahoney was allegedly having affairs with other women.
It's not clear that Mahoney will fight for his seat, although it is too late for his name to be removed from the ballot (same problem Foley had).
Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi has called for an immediate investigation.
This has been a rough year for members of Congress and sex scandals: Larry Craig and Vito Fossella have also had their rough patches.
