Raymond Francis Lederer

Democrat, Pennsylvania (1977-1982)

The Honorable Raymond Lederer was one of the Members of Congress involved in the Abscam scandal. The House Ethics Committee voted 10 to 2 in April 1981 to expel him.  Lederer allegedly took his $50,000 in a paper bag, at the hotel at Kennedy Airport in New York.

Lederer was convicted in January 1981 of accepting money in exchange for promising to introduce immigration legislation to help two wealthy Arab businessmen, who were really FBI undercover agents.  He was the sixth congressman who was associated with Abscam, and the only one who was re-elected.  Three were defeated in November 1980, one was defeated in a primary, and the fifth, John Jenrette resigned when it appeared that the Ethics Committee was about to recommend expulsion.

Ozzie Myers was expelled from Congress, but Lederer decided to resign instead. After resigning, Lederer became an ironworker.
