Jim Gibbons
Republican, Nevada (1997-2006)
The Honorable Jim Gibbons had an encounter with a Las Vegas cocktail waitress, Chrissy Mazzeo, who said that Gibbons, 61, shoved her against a wall and threatened her in a Las Vegas parking garage after she rebuffed his advances at a restaurant on October 19, 2006. Gibbons denied the cocktail waitress's story, saying that he merely helped a woman to her vehicle and grabbed her arm when she tripped and fell. Mazzeo, who sat next to Gibbons at McCormick & Schmick's restaurant said Gibbons flirted with her, put his hand on her thigh and played footsie with her. "He just started talking about how his, his marriage wasn't successful and how he had two children. He was married for 20 years and that, uh, marriage wasn't everything that it was cracked up to be, and then that's when he gave me his card." Later, in a parking garage, Mazzeo claims that Gibbons wanted to rape her. "Gosh, I learned an important lesson, never to offer a helping hand to anybody ever again," said Gibbons.
Update: The good citizens of Nevada decide that Gibbons is good enough for them, and elect him governor in November 2006. He was elected despite the cocktail waitress allegations, despite having taken an all-expenses-paid vacation from a campaign contributor, and despite hiring an illegal immigrant while supporting legislation to expel illegal immigrants from the U.S.
Update: Mazzeo alleges that someone with a connection to Gibbons' campaign offered her money to change her story. Meanwhile, it was revealed that Gibbons--a hardliner on immigration--employed an illegal immigrant from 1987 through 1993 as a babysitter and housekeeper.
Update, February 15, 2007: Federal authorities confirmed that Gibbons is under investigation for failing to properly report gifts or payments from a software company that was awarded secret military contracts while he was in Congress.
Update, May 8, 2008: Gibbons' divorce from his wife of 22 years, Dawn Gibbons, is becoming something of a public spectacle--even for Las Vegas. Dawn was credited with saving Jim's 2006 bid for the governor's office when she stood by her man. Governor Gibbons has moved out of the official residence in Carson City, and has moved to the couple's private home in Reno. (Sounds like the old days with Rudy Guiliani). Gibbons is seeking a court ruling to kick his wife out of the official residence.
Stay tuned.
