David Ferdinand Durenberger

Republican, Minnesota (1977-1994)

The Honorable David Durenberger in 1995 was sentenced to a year's probation and fined $1,000 on five misdemeanor charges of stealing $425 in public funds by abusing his Congressional spending account.  Durenberger pleaded guilty to five misdemeanor charges.

He was indicted in 1993 on charges of felony fraud, accused of stealing $3,825 by hiding his ownership of a Minneapolis condominium to improperly collect reimbursement for nights he stayed there.

Under federal sentencing guidelines, he could have received up to 10 months in prison, and fined as much as $500,000.  But his plea bargain ended that.

The Senate denounced his actions as "reprehensible."

Durenberger became a member of the Congressional Probation Caucus.

In 1994, Durenberger retired from the Senate.
