Ken Calvert
Republican, California (1993-present)
The Honorable Ken Calvert, champion of the Christian Coalition and family values, got into a little trouble during his freshman year in Congress.
Calvert picked up a twice-convicted prostitute, Lore Lindberg, parked his car on a side street, and gets caught by the police with his pants unzipped. He starts to run, but decides that that's not such a good idea.
For five months, the police withhold information from the public, and Calvert stonewalls, saying "nothing happened." Then the local newspaper sues for the police reports.
Then Calvert confessed to being found in "an extremely embarrassing situation," but then said he didn't know the woman was a prostitute, and didn't pay for sex, and therefore, didn't do anything illegal. He then apologized for his inappropriate behavior.
Calvert's excuse: his father's suicide and the breakup of his 15-year marriage.
Calvert's story: Lindberg flagged his car down on Sixth Street, a known red light district, in Riverside. He gave her a ride and she performed a sex act--though he never explicitly said so.
Fortunately for Calvert, the good folks in his district forgave him, and he was able to win in a close race, and has remained in Congress ever since.
At least he didn't go after a cop posing as a hooker (see the Honorable Alan Howe).
Update: Calvert in 2006 was under scrutiny for receiving nearly double what he paid for a four-acre parcel of land near an Air Force base after he secured $8 million for a planned freeway interchange 16 miles away. Stay tuned.
